How To Practice Gratitude

We know that gratitude is good for you. We know of its importance for our mind and bodies. We know of the massive positive impact it can have on our daily lives. We know it’s something we should be practicing often. But do we know how to practice gratitude?

At mojo&co we like to think that gratitude is not just a state of being, but it’s also a very real and active process that lives outside of the mind, as much as within it.

As with anything, it’s all relatively easy to talk about being grateful, but in order to see the benefits, it needs to be put into practice on a regular basis.

Here’s some simple, but effective ways to help you practice gratitude every day.

Start As You Mean To Go On

When you wake in the morning, before you get out of bed, take a few minutes to think about what you are grateful for. By taking the time to do this and by reflecting on the great things in your life, the things you get to do, you are more likely to start your day with a positive attitude, knowing that there are so many wonderful things in your life.

It certainly beats waking up and focusing on the negatives. You could consider the different aspects of your life and the  things you are grateful for in one or all areas; your health, relationships, your job, money, or material things.

Start a Gratitude Journal

One of the most proactive and real-world ways to practice gratitude is to start writing down things you are thankful for. Our guided journa. [www.mojoandco.ie] is an ideal resource to help you begin. What’s really important to keep in mind, is that you need to form a habit.

Being thankful for small things at the outset may seem peculiar. ‘Today I’m thankful for the sun shining, the hot cup of coffee I got to drink or the light traffic on my commute,’ etc. But stick with it, because this is how every great thing begins… with small steps. Yet once you start shifting your mindset to embrace gratitude, it soon becomes second nature.  Write down why you are grateful for that person, thing or experience and allow yourself a few moments to actually feel that gratitude.

Write a Thank You Letter

Yes with a pen and paper! And yes, pop it in the post too! The lost art of letter writing is something we are also deeply passionate about at mojo&co and that’s why we designed our beautiful range of letter writing sets. The joy of writing someone a heartfelt thank you, on paper, in your own hand as opposed to a text or email, is immense and will have huge benefits for you and for the recipient. It’s another practical way to bring gratitude into the real world.

Take a moment to observe your world

Taking the time to be mindful, to stop and appreciate the wonderful moments as they arise, is a fantastic way to feel gratitude.

When you stop to take the time to really appreciate seemingly ordinary moments, you will be surprised by how these small things are actually the big things! It could be the sound of laughing, a glorious sunrise, a beautiful meal, the list is endless but there is so much to be grateful for once you begin to mindfully observe your world.

Grab Gratitude Opportunities

Once you get into your journaling habit, you’ll notice your attitude shifts completely. Soon you realise that there are abundant opportunities to put gratitude into action.  But how you might ask? Remember, keep it simple. You could do something as small as letting someone more in need go ahead of you in the grocery queue or just pass on your pay and display ticket to another person. Small steps like this will put you on the path to positive thinking.

From paying it forward to a stranger, to allowing yourself to find the positives in the challenges that come your way, grabbing those unforeseen opportunities to practice gratitude and put that new way of thinking into action each and every day will have huge positives for you and others.

End your day with a smile

Think through your day and pick out a few moments that made you smile or moments that brought you joy. You will go to sleep full of gratitude for all the small moments you observed throughout your day.

Even if it was not the best day, being able to pick a few things will give you a sense of gratitude.
